Today’s class was a weapons class but for the first thirty minutes we practiced many types of Ukemi. In particular we practiced taking back break falls simulating a situation where you fall backwards over something. This kind of ukemi training is always interesting because the timing is very different from the nice controlled normal back break falls we do.
After ukemi practiced we worked on staff forms. 13 and 31 jo-kata and we ended the class with some kumi-jo (jo-kata with a partner). It’s always a challenge to give an honest atack with weapons because we’re afraid of hurting each other. Without an honest attack we can’t correctly learn the forms. But if we practice the forms correctly and slowly we can get give honest attacks safely and help our partner avoid developing bad habits due fear of getting hurt.
In today’s class we practiced a technique called hijishime which is an elbow lock. It’s really easy to cause pain with this technique if you just put a lot of pressure on your partner’s elbow but we try to do this technique in such a way that it doesn’t cause pain but still strongly controls our partner. This require us to move our entire body at one time without any weakness in our form. It’s really difficult!
In the evening, we had a kids class and an adult class.
In today’s kids class, we told them that yesterday’s kids class did 40 back break falls so the kids decided that they wanted to do 50 today! After that we did a lot of jumping break falls. It’s really amazing how quickly children learn the correct form.
In the adult class we did free test training. We had a good mix of men and women today which is always great fun and really good practice! At the end we did some free style techniques. Our mats are still new so they’re a little hard which makes break falls a little painful at times. Next week we’re getting a special mat to practice ukemi so we’re all looking forward to that.
