April 11th Training – weapons class

Today’s training was a weapons class and I chose to teach ken kumi tachi, specifically kumi tachi #2.

I really love the second kumi tachi. Some set forms can de difficult to keep the flow while doing the form due to very complex movements that can some times feel forced or out of place. However, kumi tachi #2 just flows perfectly. It’s easy enough that a beginner can learn in it in one class and advanced students can really work on timing, flow, spatial awareness, and connection.

The picture above shows one of the movements in kumi tachi #2. As the attacker thrusts moving his back foot forward, the defender brings his sword up to lightly deflect the thrust and at the same time moves his front foot back. This is followed up by an over head strike from the attacker, again from his back foot and the defender again moves his front foot back and deflects. From there the pattern repeats a few times. Simple, efficient, and beautiful.

April 4th Training

In today’s class we had three brand new students so everyone in class had a chance to go back to the beginning and work on some core Aikido basics. It was a lot of fun for our new students.

At Aikido Mugenjuku we believe in constant focus on and polishing of our basics so it was a really good chance for our advanced students to focus on some easy movements and really work on improving any weak points.

March 30th Training

Hi Everyone – It was nice a cool today so it was a perfect day for some hard training. We were training so hard that I forgot to take pictures!

Anyway, today we had two classes back to back. The first one is what we call a weapons class. In the weapons class we practice Bokken (wooden sword )and Jo (wooden staff) forms both by ourselves and with partners. In the first half of the weapons class, we did Yoshinkan Aikido kihon dosa with a Bokken. The added weight of the sword makes for good core muscle building and balance training.

In the second half of the class, we worked on some Jo basics and them finished with some Kumi-jo (Jo forms done in pairs). The video below is of two of our students performing Kumi-jo at the All Japan Enbutaikai last November.

In the second class, we spent some time on ukemi and trying to doing it very slow and controlled. Then we worked on some more kihon dosa but this time without a Bokken. We finished off the last 20 minutes with some half speed hajime geiko (techniques done in succession without much break time in between) to practice the techniques for the 6th kyu test. Everyone trained really hard today!
